
The first time I heard of rape as a weapon of war was in the Serbian conflict in the 90s. I didn't understand it then, but I do now. Its part humiliation, part ethnic cleansing and is all intended to harm the loser's culture/tribe for generations to come. Rape has always been a part of war, but is usually left out of the history books. Some of the most famous wars in world history ended with the murder of the losers and the rape and enslavement of the women. This article talks about how it is used in Darfur.
