A few years ago, Vanity Fair did a piece on the statistics for domestic violence among returning soldiers from Iraq and found that there is a spike in incidences of violence and even spousal murder when soldiers come home. So although I am saddened, I'm not surprised to hear about these suicide rates which are at their highest in 26 years. Some of these happened at home, some while on tour. Many of these men were on their 2nd or 3rd tour. We simply are not meeting the mental health needs of our soldiers in the field and once they come home and we have to do better. Our VA hospitals are understaffed, underfunded and basically falling apart, so where is this help going to come from?
