PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM PIMPS

9.17.2007

Gov. Spitzer deserves recognition for passing the Safe Harbor Act, a law providing aid and protection to underaged illegals who are smuggled into this country and forced into sexual slavery, but this editorial says he needs to do more for the young pre-teen girls and boys born right here in America being forced into prostitution by street pimps. Children in Need of Safe Harbor - New York Times

This got me thinking about the word "pimp" and I wonder if the people who use it really know what they are saying? The idea of being a "pimp" has become commercialized, marketable and cool; especially in the Hip Hop community. It's a label of pride and rappers who claim to have been pimps let everyone know as if somehow it makes them more of a man or something. Considering how misogynistic the rap world is, it isn't surprising they would think there is something to be proud of in fooling women into degrading themselves for their own profit.

But in reality, pimps are sick, sadistic predators that tear young girls and boys from their families (or take advantage of the fact that they have no family), rape them, force drug habits onto them in order to control them and destroy them with a life that is unimaginable to us. There is nothing cool about a pimp and more Governors need to work on protecting children in their states from these animals.
