MESSAGE HEARD LOUD & CLEAR

So most of the hot shot Republican candidates for president skipped last night's debate on black issues. I was thinking, whatever. I don't care, but then I was listening to Morning Joe on MSNBC and Joe Scarborough was pissed and he kind of got me a little pissed. As a Republican, he said he was embarrassed by this lack of respect for the issues and his party's almost refusal to even reach out. And so what if they get put on the hot seat for an hour? They want to be leader of the free world, but can't take a hard question from a black American? Of course Mike Huckabee was there; love him and knew he'd be there. I hope this works out in his favor in the polls. I know he's not a top contender, but whoever gets the nod better pick him for VP.

"Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, another candidate who made the trip, called the situation "embarrassing" for his rivals. "We've come a long way, but we have a long way to go, and we don't get there if we don't sit down and work through issues," he told the appreciative crowd."

STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

What is happening in Burma is so sad. Beating, shooting, killing Monks and locking them in their monasteries. Killing journalists. They've done whatever they can to kill the protests and its working. Only handfuls of protesters are out there now that the monks are not acting as their shields. They've cut the Internet too; hoping it keep what their doing hidden from countries like us; but its too late. Protests are happening all over the world. The U.S. has already frozen Myanmar's assets and other countries are following suit. Freedom is not a privilege; it's a God-given right.

This picture of Japanese soldier being shot dead while still holding the camera in his hand while probably end up being one of the most famous pictures in history.

MORE LISTS YOU'LL NEVER GET ON

Forbes should change its name to just "Lists" because that is all they do. The latest is TV stars and who is first? Oprah earns four times more than other TV stars Reuters.
I wonder. I wonder. Oprah! What a surprise. Ms. Midas made $260 mill last year and nobody else even came close. Do your thing, girl. Jerry Seinfeld came 2nd with $60 million, which is incredible to me. Seinfeld syndication will send his great, great grandchildren to Harvard.

Surprise of the list - George Lopez made $26 million. Doing what?

Keifer Sutherland made $22 million which is good because he'll need bail and a full-time driver when he is done serving his sentence for this 4th DUI...yes, 4th. Tyra Banks is also on there getting her paper at $15 million.
--------------------------

Knemonic.com put out their list of The 20 Most Attractive Movie Couples and I'm not a huge fan of this list, but some of them I love.

Paul Newman & Liz Taylor from Cat on A Hot Tin Roof was just the hotness 10x over.

Paul Walker is probably going to be my 3rd baby's daddy, but there was noooo chemistry between him & Jessica Alba in Into The Blue. Please.

I'll accept JLo & George Clooney in Out of Sight. They were pretty hot.

And although I do not approve of cheating on your wife, Brad & Angie's chemistry in Mr. & Mrs. Smith was serious.

UP OR OUT

Gulf coast cities are trying to get rid of all the people who haven't found their way out of the FEMA trailers and into a home of their own and they are finding some success. Cities try to shut FEMA trailer parks - USATODAY.com. They don't like the way it looks and they feel it is hampering overall progress. I guess they feel that most of these folks are just lazy and will stay in that trailer until the government finds somewhere to put them. If you can't show you are making progress towards rebuilding, you're out of there. Legal aid firms are trying to fight to keep them there until they are ready to move out, but they aren't winning every case and some of their clients end up homeless.

"It's an act of tough love," says Pascagoula, Miss., Mayor Matthew Avara. "We don't want to put any unneeded hardship on any of our people, but at the same time, we've got to move forward, and the way to move forward is to close down these parks."

It seems a little harsh to me, but I know this is probably a good thing for many of the 65,600 families still in trailers more than 2 years later. What happened to them was horrible, but everyone has to move forward and I can understand the need for these FEMA symbols to be gone for the city trying to rebuild itself. It isn't impossible. At the end of 2006, more than 100,000 families were still in trailers, so tens of thousands are doing what they need to do. I would like to see if, of the 65K left, how many used to be on government assistance. That might have something to do with them not taking the initiative; expecting the government to provide them with their next housing. You can see (below) that almost 80% are still in Louisiana.

More than two years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, 65,641 FEMA trailers are still occupied. Where they are:
Louisiana: 47,897
Mississippi: 16,475
Texas: 1,001
Alabama: 268 keçiören asansörlü nakliyat,keçiören evden eve nakliyat,keçiören nakliyat

I've used to get a glimpse of the Pyramids of Egypt. Google exposes all, including the Navy Seat training base in Cali is in the shape of the Swastika. Not cool. BAD NEWS ALL AROUND

The latest on a number that we don't hear about much in the news, the deaths of insurgents in Iraq. 19,000 insurgents killed in Iraq since '03 - USATODAY.com.

Our troop deaths are now over 3100. The latest is 27,000 U.S. troops wounded. Also, for the thousands more that are wounded mentally, the promises made are not being met. Report Says Fixes Slow To Come at Walter Reed - washingtonpost.com.

All of these numbers are horrendous and it was hard to swallow the Democratic candidates response to the Tim Russert's question last night about ending the war when/if they enter office on January 20, 2009. Basically there was no guarantee that we'd even be out by 2013 (the end of the first term). There are simply no guarantees in war and if the administration had realized that before we went in, maybe they would have planned better.

There are also 25,000 detainees in military custody in Iraq, so at this point, the country will run out of men by next week.

General Robert Gates has asked Congress to give him another $190 billion for the war in 2008; $42 billion more than original asked for. This will bring likely bring us over the Trillion dollar mark considering we have spent more than $800 million on both Afghanistan & Iraq since 9/11. This is what the terrorists wanted, right? 9/11 will bankrupt the United States. Increase In War Funding Sought - washingtonpost.com

I DON'T HATE THE GAYS...I JUST THINK THEY'RE GROSS

When I saw the news headline that General Peter Pace made a statement condemning homosexuality as immoral, I thought there was a computer glitch. That happened like 6 months ago, right? Uhm, yeah it did, but he's still harping on that as of yesterday. He just wants to make it clear that he's talking about the sex, not the person. Can someone please just turn his mic off? And what does "the gay" have to do with the Pentagon's 2008 war spending request to the Senate Appropriations Committee anyway? Leave them alone and focus on less soldiers, gay or straight, dying and being dismembered. My Way News - Pace Repeats View That Gay Sex Immoral

"Are there wonderful Americans who happen to be homosexual serving in the military? Yes," he told the Senate Appropriations Committee during a hearing focused on the Pentagon's 2008 war spending request. "We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it," he added. "And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

This article, Illegal immigrants moving out - USATODAY.com, is saying that illegal immigrants who were living in states, counties & cities that adopted strict immigration policies are moving. They're going back to their countries or moving to another state.
There's no hard demographic data on the trend, partly because it's hard to track people who are in the USA illegally. But school officials, real estate agents and church leaders say the movement is
unmistakable.

Schools in places like Tulsa, OK have seen a lot of children drop out since school started earlier this month. One school has had 14 Hispanic children leave and 4 more said they will be leaving. Oklahoma recently implemented a law that will cuts off benefits such as welfare and college financial aid for illegals. More stats are in the article.

This is good, but if they're just moving to another state, what have we really done? If the federal government was implementing the immigration laws the way it should be and promised it would, these piece meal state laws would not be necessary. I sincerely hope their lack of action on immigration reform comes back to bite them in 2008. This issue may not be important to Capitol Hill, but it is important to American voters.

DORM ROOMS & PRISON CELLS

Studies tell us a lot and they also tell us very little. This latest census report tells us that more blacks & Latinos are living in prison cells than in dorm rooms. Census: More blacks, Latinos live in cells than in dorms - CNN.com. However, that only counts kids living in dorm rooms (hence the headline-duh!). How long were you in the dorms? I was in there 2 years before moving to an apartment. Most black students go to college near their home, so they never move into a dorm. A lot of universities are requiring freshmen to live on campus regardless which is probably a good thing.

The study does reveal that the numbers are reversed to a very large degree when you include all those commuting students. Still, it is a problem and while black leaders, in this article at least, want to blame the education system, I would have to disagree. There is plenty of blame to go around and our education system can take its piece of that pie; so can our legal system, but ultimately it comes down to the love, expectations, guidance & discipline of the parents of these men and women when they were growing up. Among non-Hispanic whites, more than twice as many live in college housing as in prison or jail.

NOT ALL TRADITIONS ARE GOOD

9.26.2007

More little girls are dying as many Muslim societies around the world continue to practice genital mutilation, but Egypt is trying to do something about it. In this story, about a dead 13 year old girl, the men in her village are angrier that the government shut down the clinic that killed her than they are at her untimely death. Voices Rise in Egypt to Shield Girls From an Old Tradition - New York Times. They feel it was necessary in order to "preserve her chastity and honor" and that is just a risk worth taking. Yes, I guess its bad if an innocent 13 year old girl dies, but nothing could be worse than imagining her experiencing sexual arousal or an orgasm. How do you speak to people who simply do not believe a female has a right to own her own sexuality? Just because something is a tradition, doesn't mean its right. And I don't want to hear about "you have to respect other people's culture." Slavery was a tradition in our culture for 100s of years. Wrong is wrong.

I think if you want to protect your daughter's honor, then raise her to be an honorable person. Don't mutilate her to chastity. And by the way, maybe you want to consider raising your sons to be moral too. I might be crazy, but generally I think things go better when both boys & girls are taught to be sexually responsible & honorable.
I'm glad that Egypt has taken on this campaign. Although they outlawed this act in 1996, they never enforced it whole heartedly. It was a cosmetic thing to appease human rights organizations. But recently, they have decided to really make a change and are noting some progress; especially in the urban areas. Most importantly, they are showing that is not called for in Islam. The country's "grand mufti," has declared it a "haram" or prohibited by Islam. The country's highest religious official, Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, has spoken out against it as well.

Not only was it unusual for the government to shut down the clinic, but the health minister has also issued a decree banning health care workers— or anyone — from conducting the procedure for any reason...Television advertisements have been shown on state channels to discourage it; and a national hot line was set up to answer the public’s questions about genital cutting.

JENA 6 PROSECUTOR SPEAKS

Reed Walters, the prosecutor under fire in the Jena 6 case, has an Op-Ed in the NYTimes - Justice in Jena. It appears he has taken a "just following orders" approach.

In the final analysis, I am bound to enforce the laws of Louisiana as they exist today, not as they might in someone’s vision of a perfect world.

There are many problems with this whole case, but for me it comes down to this. You can't decide to enforce the law when you want. Something should have been done about the noose on the tree. No one, including students, has a 1st Amendment right to incite violence or riots. That's what a noose is meant to do. Something should have been done about the contentious interactions between white & black students that followed the noose incident, which went too far on both sides. Is it true that a black student was a victim of assault by whites prior to the Jena 6 incident? Why did he wait to do something once blacks assaulted a white student? And why would you decide that a school fight constituted attempted murder?

CENTER IN THE FRONT

Read this NYTimes article, The Center Holds, by David Brooks. He says we can learn most of what we need to know about the future of Democratic Party by paying attention to both the liberals and centrists.

"In the beginning of August, liberal bloggers met at the YearlyKos convention while centrist Democrats met at the Democratic Leadership Council’s National Conversation. Almost every Democratic presidential candidate attended YearlyKos, and none visited the D.L.C."

Despite this, Brooks says that the future of the party is the Center and it better be. If the liberals and their self-righteous "people are too stupid to know what they really want" attitude take over, the party is doomed again.

LITTLE ROCK

It was 50 years ago when 9 students became the face of American Integration. The country would never be the same and the struggle for equal rights is yet to be resolved. I remember when I saw the video taken of that moment during history class. I didn't understand how human beings could be so uncivilized and just plain evil. The hatred in their eyes and their voices was so vile.

Today, Bill Clinton will be in his home state with these men and women that changed America to commemorate their experiences and where we've come since.
I support Brown v. Board of Education because I understand what the NAACP was doing. They didn't buy into the idea that black kids could learn better by just being in the presence of white children. They knew that 'separate but equal' was never going to get their kids on an even playing field. If they could have schools of the same quality, they would have probably been satisfied, although segregation at its core just doesn't work regardless of equal resources.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION UPDATE

How do you feel about this? U.S. Rule Limits Emergency Care for Immigrants - New York Times. The government is trying to redefine what qualifies as "emergency care" and they're saying that chemo doesn't fit the bill. This is a pretty huge deal considering it is necessary to save the lives of cancer victims and it is very expensive. You're paying for it. Expect to hear much more from both sides on this one. "The federal government has told health officials that chemotherapy, which had been covered for illegal immigrants under a government-financed program for emergency medical care, does not qualify for coverage. The decision sets the stage for a battle between the state and federal governments over how medical emergencies are defined."

The U.S. continues to take legal action against states who are doing what the U.S. refuses to do despite it being their job. U.S. sues Ill. over immigration law - Yahoo! News. "The Illinois law would prevent employers from participating in a federal program that verifies whether workers are legally authorized to work in the United States until a federal database is more accurate." U.S. Sues Illinois to Let Employers Use Immigrant Databases - New York Times
-----------------------
This is the story of illegal immigrants who are waiting for the laws to change so they can utilize the American education, that you probably paid for, and get a high-paying American job. Illegal immigrants pin hopes, again, on "Dream Act" Seattle Times Newspaper. The subject of this story is a 24-year old illegal immigrant female who has just received her undergrad degree, is starting her masters now and expects to go for her PhD, hoping that in the meanwhile the laws will change that will allow her to be a social worker. She sees the fast track "Dream Act" as her way. "The so-called Dream Act — short for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act — would apply to illegal immigrants under 30 who came to the United States before they were 16, have lived here for at least five years, graduated from a U.S. high school and stayed out of trouble." Personally, I want to know if she has paid/is paying for her American higher education or did American taxpayers?

However, the numbers include people charged with crimes but not yet tried as well as those who have been convicted.

WHAT? WHAT DID I SAY?

Once again, Bill O'Reilly showed himself to be....well, who we all thought he was; pretty arrogant and ignorant. I'm tempted to use the R-word, but you know how seriously I take that word (hence the comical avatar). After I defended him to all my friends who called him racist for ranting about VATech inviting Nas to rap at their memorial concert. Nas' albums include words of not just violence, but gun violence and chantings of "kill kill kill" and "murder murder murder." Bill was right. This was a memorial for victims of gun violence. He shouldn't have been there.

Now Bill is just wrong...and kind of stupid. Based on these comments (below) he made on his radio show about being in Sylvia's restaurant in Harlem, a place known all over the world, I'm assuming he expected to be served on the floor next to a group of thugs playing Bid Whiz and thought his waitress would have curlers in her hair and one of her illegitimate babies on her hips when she asked him, "What the f*$# U want to eat?"

"[W]e went to Sylvia's, a very famous restaurant in Harlem. I had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful. They all watch The Factor. You know, when Sharpton and I walked in, it was like a big commotion and everything, but everybody was very nice. And I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship."

By "we" he means Al Sharpton, who is probably pretty embarrassed for bringing him there at this point. They're kind of two sides of the same coin to me, but Bill is going to get (well deserved) hell for this one. My favorite line is "they all watch The Factor." So he is also delusional.

WELL DRESSED MADMEN

What's his name, and his business casual dress style, is in the U.S. now and the press is having a ball. He took back his request to visit Ground Zero after a lot of people had something to say about it. I didn't care. I think the image of him planting a reef at the site was a statement against Osama and terrorism. That works in our favor even if its totally fake. We'll have the photo to share with the world when he shows his hypocrisy. Some people made a fuss about him speaking at Columbia, but the school responded by saying they'd even let Hitler speak if he was around. I'm sure the Jewish students were pleased. He is pretty much the closest thing to Hitler we have right now considering his plans to get rid of Israel.
My favorite was how he criticized Bush for being a religious man yet engaging in such violence as he has in Iraq. This man.....don't even get me started on the hypocrisy here. Daily News: Iranian madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad walks among us

NOTRE DAME HYPOCRISY

Oh well, the big, special, blessed Notre Dame football team lost another game and broke a record for a beginning season losing record. Look at the schedule. Their last 4 games look like a win, but they could go 8-0 before they get that first win. What are they doing at ND? They're blaming Tyrone Willingham. He's been gone for 2 years, but its still his fault. His upperclassmen aren't performing, so its his bad recruiting that's the problem. It's a bunch of BS. Weis won for two years with Willingham's recruits. It's Weis' underclassmen that aren't performing and maybe his coaching is why the upperclassmen aren't performing. There are a ton of college teams out there where you can see underclassmen taking the lead because they have to. Besides the quarterback, Weis' guys aren't performing.

I'm not surprised they're blaming it on Willingham. After all, Republicans are still trying to blame everything on Bill Clinton. However, its going to get harder and harder to get away with this. This will be especially so when that 4-year mark hits next year; which the school harped and harped was some kind of invisible test for whether or not to keep a coach on. Unless something, a lot of things, change, they will keep losing and when everyone sees that Weis' job is not at all in jeopardy, the hypocrisy claims will begin. They already have begun, but they'll be hard to divert soon. And for those who think Tyrone is getting a kick out of this, you're probably wrong. He's got too much class for that.

AN ISSUE OF CONCERN

I'm sure the Left will accuse me of being Xenophobic, but I am concerned that the Dubai government is about to acquire 20% of of the Nasdaq. I continue to be concern when I hear that the London Stock Exchange is now 50% owned by Arab states; Qatar & Borse Dubai and that major American private equity firms like Blackstone and Carlyle have sold 10% or more of their stake to Abu Dhabi's government.

The American dollar is already suffering all over the world and a disruption of our economy would be an easy way to hurt America. For Pete's sake, as of today, the U.S. dollar is worth less than the Canadian dollar and that is the 8th sign of the apocalypse. Seriously, do we want an Arab country to own such a huge amount of our second biggest stock exchange? We're doing enough damage to our own economy. What could someone who wants to hurt us do?

Yes, I know its unfair to demonize the entire country, of course I love Dubai's hotels and it seems as if Dubai & Qatar both enjoy living well too much to want to engage in economic terrorism, but I still think it's okay to be concerned about this.

WHY?

Mattel apologizes to China for toy recalls - USATODAY.com. Mattel, the world's largest toymaker, apologized on Friday for damaging China's reputation after recent massive recalls of its Chinese-made toys, admitting it targeted some goods that were actually up to scratch.

There had to be some threats involved to induce this apology, because its just ridiculous. China must have threatened to kick Mattel out and Mattel can't afford to have factories anywhere else, so it tried to do damage control. Otherwise, why would you apologize to a country that allowed CHILDREN'S TOYS to go out full of lead? Why?

I've seen a lot of blogs talk about whether or not these boys deserve the support because some of them have records. I just don't think that's the point. For me, this is about the justice system and a community that turns a blind eye to things like nooses on trees and then overreacts to a schoolyard fight by charging attempted murder. The 'victim' went home from the hospital and got his party on later that same night. Either way, I think it is fascinating to see how these types of things happen every day, but for someone reason people will and won't pick up on just one and go with it.

JESSE JACKSON & FOOLISHNESS

Why people are still reporting what Jesse Jackson has to say about anything is still a surprise to me, but I guess I should at least be happy they are printing this because it just reiterates what I've always said about him. Report: Jesse Jackson says Obama 'acting like he's white' - USATODAY.com. He's like Bill O'Reilly who decides that anyone who doesn't agree with him is somehow of questionable character. Likewise Reverend Baby Daddy, as he has done in the past, is assuming that any black public figure who doesn't act in the way he thinks they should isn't "authentically black" because somehow he is the barometer of whatever "authentically black" is.

Jackson said such about Obama because he doesn't appreciate Barry's response (or lack of) to the Jena 6 controversy. "Jackson sharply criticized presidential hopeful and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for “acting like he’s white” in what Jackson said has been a tepid response to six black juveniles’ arrest on attempted-murder charges in Jena, La. Jackson, who also lives in Illinois, endorsed Obama in March, according to The Associated Press."

Just from my viewpoint, at my law school, some of the angriest people about this issue are white students, so he is insulting white people by equating their skin color with their values. Also, "acting like he's white" is a bunch of high school BS. I was accused of "acting like I think I'm white" by other black students in high school for trying to excel academically. Grow up.

Personally, I do wish that Obama would speak out more about this issue because it is important and has really been upsetting to me, but I wish all the candidates would and I don't think their lack of action here has anything to do with their skin color; maybe more about the strength of their spine. This method is a low, but not unexpected, blow from Jackson. Of course, if you read my blog, you know my opinion is influenced by my dislike for him (bringing pregnant mistress to counsel cheating President and wife on their marriage only being part of it), but it's my post, so make your own if you disagree. BTW - Jackson says he doesn't remember saying that.

If you want to do something about the Jena 6 issue, go online and find out what your community is doing this Thursday. I'll be attending a fundraiser (to pay defense expenses) at my law school.

JENA 6 RALLY

So we're surprised this happened in Jena, LA? I guess not considering...."African-Americans, who are a little more than a tenth of the town's nearly 3,000 people, still live mostly in the two areas that have always been the black sections of town. They worship separately from white churchgoers. When they die, they are buried in the black cemetery."

There weren't any civil rights marches in this town during the movement 40 years ago, but they're about to have a big one with an expected 40,000 people. The media has swarmed and you know there are many in this community that just don't see what the problem is. They've lived their whole lives by racial double standards and to them, there is probably no such thing as an injustice to blacks. I sincerely hope that there will be people of all races in Jena for this demonstration. The citizens of that town need to know that it isn't just black people who are outraged by this. Right is not black or white; it's just right.

HE SAID IT

Senator Larry "I am sooo not gay" said he was coming back and he finally did. He showed up on the Capitol yesterday, I guess out of nowhere. I thought he was already here, but apparently he was in hiding. I would love to see the cold shoulder this man is receiving. The article states that he was greeted warmly by some; probably the ones who are just happy they weren't caught soliciting sex in a public bathroom one of the times they did it.

He'll be around until the 30th unless he can get the charges, that he voluntarily confessed to, dropped. If he can't, he'll quit permanently. He also has the ACLU, friend to every conservative Republican senator, on his side. They are arguing that his bathroom bust was "unconstitutional." Personally, I think this guy was totally soliciting sex in the bathroom, but I have to say I'm not sure his odd behavior would have been enough to convict him. He made it easy on them by confessing to a lesser charge and that can mean a bunch of things; one being that he was guilty and feared what might come out if he went to trial. I'm not ready to ignore the 20+ year history of this man's rumored sexuality.

"Both the House and Senate are now considering bills that would allocate $7 billion over five years to states that enact sensible and needed reforms to their programs. CLINTON & HEALTH CARE

Clinton is going big on her health care plan and I will give her credit for being able to articulate it so well. She learned this from her husband; the art of delivering a message in a way that made you believe it had to work. It sounds like it makes such sense and based on many of these articles below, both the health care industry and Wall Street are buying it, but I'm not.

How would we pay for $110 billion a year in health care? And all the blah, blah, blah about partnering with companies to pay for it is not gonna happen because stockholders won't tolerate this. We're in a war that is costing millions every week with no clear end in sight? Our deficit is obscene. We're going to enter a recession in 2008 because of all this housing nonsense and the Euro is about to surpass the Dollar as the currency of choice across the world.

Our health care system and our taxes will look like Canada after this; and both are complete disasters. Based on my knowledge of almost nothing about health care, I think the answer to the problem is a free market that resembles car insurance. Car insurance isn't cheap, but it is manageable, covers the big things and takes care of you in a disaster. Because they know it won't cover everything, people are more likely to take care of their cars. Car insurance would cost at least thousands more if we expected it to pay (minus a $15 copay) for the cost to fill it with gas, replace a tire, change the oil and so on. These items don't belong in insurance. They are left to consumers to pay, so they wouldn't abuse it and the demand has created competition in a private market supplier field and competition is how you keep prices low. This is why you can get an oil change for $19.99. There is no $7 processing fee and $50 overhead charge from Geico.

SAUDI WOMEN ARE RAISING THEIR FISTS

No, not to knock somebody in the head. They're petitioning the King for the right to drive a car. Apparently, in Saudi Arabia, you need a penis to understand the rules of the road. Foolishness, I know. Being able to drive is a sign of independence and independent women are a threat to weak men. I was watching a special on Saudi Arabian women and the female narrator (a native of the Kingdom now living in England) said that this country is on the Top 20 list of sales for Victoria's Secret, so something is going on there we don't know about. They aren't all buying the cotton jumper.

Of course, some of these women know how to drive. It's like in slave days when some slaves knew how to read and write even though it was illegal. And I'm sure there are more than a few (I hope) Saudi men who will be right there with them. If I had as much money as all these Saudi women do, I would fight for the right to drive and still use a driver everywhere I went anyway. The point is the right, not the driving. LET'S SEE IF THIS ONE CAN REMEMBER ANYTHING

Since remembering whether or not he brushed his teeth this morning would be an improvement over his predecessor, I'm assuming former judge, Michael B. Mukasey, is qualified for the position of Attorney General. He's not a Bush croney, so that's a plus. But he is a friend of Giuliani, so that's a minus. Also, he looks like the kind of guy that refers to young people as "Whippersnappers." I'm not sure if that is good or not.

"Unlike Mr. Gonzales, Mr. Mukasey is not a close confidant of the president. Nor is he a Washington insider. But people in both political parties say he possesses the two qualities that Mr. Bush has been looking for in a nominee: a law-and-order sensibility that dovetails with the president’s agenda for the fight against terror, and the potential to avoid a bruising confirmation battle with the Democrats who now run the Senate. With 16 months left in office, Mr. Bush can ill afford a drawn-out confirmation fight."

PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM PIMPS

Gov. Spitzer deserves recognition for passing the Safe Harbor Act, a law providing aid and protection to underaged illegals who are smuggled into this country and forced into sexual slavery, but this editorial says he needs to do more for the young pre-teen girls and boys born right here in America being forced into prostitution by street pimps. Children in Need of Safe Harbor - New York Times

This got me thinking about the word "pimp" and I wonder if the people who use it really know what they are saying? The idea of being a "pimp" has become commercialized, marketable and cool; especially in the Hip Hop community. It's a label of pride and rappers who claim to have been pimps let everyone know as if somehow it makes them more of a man or something. Considering how misogynistic the rap world is, it isn't surprising they would think there is something to be proud of in fooling women into degrading themselves for their own profit.

But in reality, pimps are sick, sadistic predators that tear young girls and boys from their families (or take advantage of the fact that they have no family), rape them, force drug habits onto them in order to control them and destroy them with a life that is unimaginable to us. There is nothing cool about a pimp and more Governors need to work on protecting children in their states from these animals.

RETURNING BEHIND THE VEIL

Lifting the Veil is a CNN special on the lives of Afghan women that aired this past weekend. It's a follow up to CNN's post-9/11 "Behind the Veil" which disgusted and shocked everyone.

What has life for Afghan women been like after the fall of the Taliban? Like most Americans, I was eager to see the Taliban crushed and I would have been even if they hadn't helped Osama and his gang. They're idea of religion is horribly oppressive and inhumane. Who could imagine a God that doesn't want to hear laughter? I saw a tape of a woman who was covered from head to toe being hit by a man with a stick because he said he could see some of her ankle. No one did anything.

Then I saw a tape of women taking their burkas off and opening up beauty salons, going back to their careers, playing music, wearing makeup and most importantly, girls going back to school. So are things much better for Afghan women? Not really. We read about the women who have to burn themselves just to escape domestic abuse and those where the men have maintained the Taliban's idea of women and continue to oppress their female family members. And if those rumors of the Taliban taking Afghanistan back little town by little town are true, what does that mean for the women?

THE DANGERS OF CROSSING THE BORDER

We read a lot about all the dangers awaiting illegals once they get across the border. There is a sex slave industry that traps the women and girls (and boys) and the mistreatment by employers looking for cheap labor that cost them nothing in benefits.

But how many illegals die before they even get here? More and more according to this NYTimes article, At the U.S. Border, the Desert Takes a Rising Toll. It's a hot, hot desert and hundreds of people don't make it all the way. The temperature, especially at the Arizona border gets well above 100 with no shade in sight. I was in Vegas just this past July. It was 110 degrees and I could barely breathe after being out there less than 20 minutes, so I can't even imagine what they are experiencing. Some volunteer groups have placed water tanks at various locations along the desert so illegals can stay hydrated while they cross the border.

A lot of people are upset about that because they say its is aiding and abetting crime. I was upset at first and it still bothers me. But then I found out about the number of very small children being forced across the borders illegally by their parents. And there are also the unborn children with parents who want to use them as anchor babies who will suffer if their mothers get ill or die. And as much as I am against illegal immigration, I don't think death is a justifiable punishment even for adults who are taking the risk. So I don't mind about the water tanks, but I wouldn't expect the issue of the increasing number of border crossing deaths to make much of a difference to anyone.

CHILDREN ARE A CREDIT RISK

In China at least. I actually don't have a big problem with this. It's much, much better than forced abortions, but I just don't think its effective. In the urban areas of China, if you have more than one child, the government will put a black mark on your credit record. Since the fines already in place don't really bother newly rich Chinese, maybe paying 10% interest on a car loan will. Weigh it out. A jip on a car loan vs. a baby to love. I'd pay higher interest rates for a baby to love. I don't think these people should be fined. They're wealthy, so they should just be forced to pay for everything the government otherwise would for only child. Breitbart.com: China Cracks Down on One-Child Violators. INTERRACIAL - THE REMIX PART 7,322

9.12.2007

Everyone A few people are up in arms over VH1's portrayal of black women and a boycott has been launched. EURweb.com - Boycott Launched Against VH1: Network Targeted For Its Negative Portrayal of Black Women. While the channel shows Flava of Love ten times a day, the network turned down a reality show about professional black women who date outside of their race called "Interracial Love." Not because it was controversial (and has a stupid name), but because they said it isn't ghetto enough. The women on the show are actually educated, employed, don't dress like whores, don't have any baby daddies and speak as if they've heard English before. A pissed off employee leaked this info from a production meeting: According to the employee, network execs passed on the idea because it would feature professional black women who choose to look beyond race to find true love. The images would be in direct contrast to those shown on such shows as "Flavor of Love" and its spawns "I Love New York" and "Flavor of Love: Charm School."

My opinion? If its a VH1 show, its probably going to be a piece of crap like everything else on that channel. But they should consider the show's timeliness. It seems like black women getting their swirl on, which has been happening forever, is the "thing" now. Celebrity black women like Rhianna, Eve(rapper), Halle, Tyra, Zoe Kravitz(quasi-high profile?) and white men like George Lucas, Justin Chambers and Gerard Butler are doing it. Even Ms. America Erica Dunlap has gone the miscegenation route (with beautiful wedding pics on her website BTW). In addition, all the mainstream news articles, dating sites like "Swirl Society" focused on this particular connection are really popular right now. Why not take advantage, VH1? I guess you just like your black women one way only. I'd watch the show for about half an episode and then be done with it. I'm just not interested in reality and IR dating is not a big deal to me. Still it would be half an episode longer than I'd be willing to give to any of their others shows.

BTW- I recently found out one of the creators of "South Park," Matt Stone, has a black girlfriend and for some reason that just makes me crack up. I don't know why. I'm just stupid and immature, but I don't see a sister putting up with his foolishness. Both those boys are clowns.

THEY STILL DO THIS?

Earlier today, the state executed a man via the electric chair. Yes, they electrocuted him. Tenn. executes man by electric chair - USATODAY.com. No sympathies for the animal. He murdered four of his own children in cold blood, and even though I am not a fan of the death penalty (because I think getting it wrong once is worse than getting it right 100 times) I'm not going to shed a tear for him. He's one of those people my daddy would say "needed some killin." My first problem here is that TN is one of these states that lets an inmate choose how they want to be executed (those convicted before 1999). The state prefers lethal injection, but Holton choose the electric chair.

Okay, WTF with mass child murderers getting to make the choice in the first place? Did he ask his children how they would prefer to be murdered before he lined them up in his auto garage and shot them dead with an assault rifle? Second, electrocution is violent and I have a problem with that. I realize ending a life is what it is and there is no "good" way to do it and in itself it is a violent act, but if you contend that state-sponsored execution is supposed to be humane, then it can't resemble a violent murder in any manner, which is why lethal injection should be the only choice if you're going to make the choice at all.

BTW - This article states that the last person executed via electrocution in TN was a convicted rapist in 1960. Wait...rapist? Uhm...I'm assuming there was a murder at some point, but who knows? They'll give you the needle for speeding in Texas, so its possible in 1960, rape could get you dead in TN. I'm just surprised the chair still worked after collecting dust for 47 years. If it hadn't worked that could have been awkward.

BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP OVER?

9.11.2007

Okay, so when I talk about illegal immigration I'm talking about people who came here illegally by choice. I'm not talking about their small children who had no choice (which is why we can't keep them out of schools) and their children who are born in the U.S. But this "anchor baby" strategy has pissed a lot of people off and there is a movement to end automatic birthright citizenship for children of illegals. This is a huuuuge deal. Someone born in the U.S. is supposed to be a U.S. citizen, but if we only let that apply to babies born to legal immigrants and citizens, we are taking this up a notch that we better be prepared for. This can really be spinned to make us look like pure evil, but it can also screw up the plans of millions of illegals who take advantage of our current birthright laws. Where do you stand? I'm afraid of doing this, not because of the law itself which I can kind of agree with, but what this law could be the beginning of. Our Constitution was created to protect us (the states) from our federal government and also from ourselves. La Shawn Barber: End birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants - Examiner.com

LOW EXPECTATIONS & BLACK SAT SCORES

Although black students in the D.C. region are at the top of the list of all black students in the nation when it comes to SAT scores, even those at the highest quality public and private schools are scoring lower than their white fellow students. In Arlington County its 1804 vs. 1470. In Anne Arundel County it is 1646 to 1336. In Montgomery County, where more black kids are in AP classes than anywhere else, the difference is 1893 to 1578; a 300 point difference. This is all out of a 2400 possible score. Because the aggregate of the scores tends to be very high, the racial gap tends to go ignored and its mostly because of what our president calls the soft bigotry of low expectations by both black and white students. Area Schools' Success Obscures Lingering Racial SAT Gap - washingtonpost.com. Our children will do what is expected of them, but more than their parents have to do the expecting. COLLEGE RACIAL POLITICS

This article caught my interest because I worked on The Daily Illini when I went there. CampusProgress.org The Racial Politics of College Newspapers. It was the only paying job I had during college. 10cents a line! I was one of only a few blacks on a very big student newspaper at a school that had a good number of Chicago-based minority students. I worked mostly on the Housing Beat and odds and ends, so I didn't deal much with racially charged issues but I was sent along to events that had a "black issue" component to it. It was a token offering, but I just liked the opportunity to participate in more black stories in the paper. It seems a shame that so few minorities work at papers in areas that have a large minority population in the community and/or on campus. It's also a shame that newspapers aren't working harder with the student groups to get more minorities on their paper. The result is a lost perspective and many newsworthy issues being passed over.

THIS TUESDAY MORNING

When I reflect on this day six years, I remember my thoughts completely. It was an absolutely beautiful day. The sky was completely blue and there was no hint of humidity. I also remember thinking that some idiot had flown his little private plane into the North Tower and had killed a bunch of a people. I never believed for a second it was an attack. I was in my car on the way to work when the second building was hit and my stomach tightened. I didn't know what to do, so I just went to work. I remember a co-worker whose parent worked in the Pentagon and she couldn't reach her. I remember my Daddy calling to make sure I was alright. I remember being angry. I remember being scared. I remember wondering where the heck the President was. I lived near the Pentagon then and drove by that big, black hole every day on my way to the GW Parkway. It looked unreal. In D.C., just as we were able to take a breathe, the DC sniper terror began.

Although we will, and should, never forget this day and how it has changed our lives and our country forever, I still agree with Thomas Friedman who said that we must remember that our country is defined by July 4th, not September 11th. Our administration has forgotten that. Our hope is a better tool against madness than our fear and hate. Of all the stories I've read that touched me, the Washingtonian's story about a group of 6 years olds who were all born on 9/11/2001 and what their family went through on that blessed but horrible day, was the most touching. I recommend it. The Babies of 9/11: “You Think the World’s Coming to an End” - Washingtonian.com

NO ONE CAN HAVE IT ALL

One of the reasons I'm such an advocate of marriage and family planning is because children need both of their parents. In other cultures at other times the traditional family unit was probably not the ideal situation. But in our time (and really what other time matters than the one we are in), this family structure offers the best chance for children; all else being equal. And as black people, with our children at so much of a disadvantage already, why we would make a choice, as we have over th past 40 years, to put them at further disadvantage by creating these random, uncertain family situations or breeding units is confusing.

Boys need fathers to know what type of man they should be. Girls need fathers to know what type of man they should be looking for. I grew up in a traditional home. Father was protector, provider and disciplinarian. Mother was nurturer, guide and teacher. Even those times when they weren't getting along, my parents maintained their parenting roles that offered us stability. These are different roles that play perfectly off of each other, which is why this latest fatherhood survey is disappointing. Survey: Working dads want more family time - CNN.com. Dads in general are MIA with 1/4 of all fathers spending less than an hour with their children each day. The good news is that many Dads are aware that this is hurting them and their children and more are looking for ways to have that work/life balance that everyone used to think only women needed to find.

We all have bills to pay, but our society has to stop putting so much pressure on men to conquer the world and make it more acceptable for them to just be at a soccer game or home at 6:30 instead of every business meeting or burning the night oil every night.

Based on my knowledge of absolutely nothing about this security process, I still believe that a year from now, if we're still there, they still won't be ready.

HATERS IN FULL EFFECT

So now that Thompson is gobbling up the spotlight again, the other candidates lament their inability to get enough of a substantial lead in the pack to not be threatened have resorted to making him Public Enemy #1. By doing so, they will only put him more in the spotlight, giving him pub that he can't afford to get himself because he doesn't have enough money. Thompson a Target at G.O.P. Debate - New York Times

CHECK THAT LABEL

“Every time you see ‘Made in China,’ ” he said, “you think, ‘wait a minute, something’s not right here.’ ”

“Made in the U.S.A.” used to be a label flaunted primarily by consumers in the Rust Belt and rural regions. Increasingly, it is a status symbol for cosmopolitan bobos, and it is being exploited by the marketers who cater to them.

PEOPLE PRETTIER THAN YOU MAKING BABIES

Halle Berry is 3-months pregnant. She just turned 41 last month, which isn't too old anymore. A friend of my sisters got married at 38. She had the first baby at 40 and the second at 42. She had to take extra precautions, but the pregnancy was fine and so were the babies. Her husband is 6 years younger than her. Berry can afford the best care, but she is also a diabetic which can be a problem in pregnancy at times. I wish her the best. I know she said a few years ago she was never getting married again. Marriage hasn't worked well for her, so I understand that. Who wants to say, "This is my 3rd husband" anyway? She seems very happy with Gabriel and he is wicked hot, so everyone will be excited to see what this baby looks like. We'll forgive him for being Canadian. E! WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE

Senator Larry "I am so not gay" Craig has decided to reconsider his resignation from the Senate. He seems determined to believe that despite the fact that documented (on video & audio) instances of suspicion of his homosexual or bisexual history have been going on since 1982, he is being railroaded and can convince the world that he didn't do what the cops are saying he did. Oh and I forgot, HE CONFESSED. First, let me say again I don't care if he is gay or bisexual. Like I said, we all have to roll how we roll. This may be a problem for his wife, but that's between the two of them. I'm just so sick of this lying and hypocrisy. I'm not certain, but I'm inclined to believe that if you're hearing the same rumors about someone for more than 25 years, it's probably true. Oh and also, HE CONFESSED.

If he officials retracts his resignation, it would be pure hubri and we've seen this before. Remember when it came out that Reverend Jesse Jackson had a baby with a mistress? Remember when it was found out that he had the nerve to bring his pregnant mistress to Washington, D.C. while he was "counseling" President Clinton & Hillary on their marriage after the Monica mess? When it all came out, initially Reverend Baby Daddy said he was going to step down and take some time out in wake of his mistakes. That lasted about one week and a half before he changed his mind, he says in response to his supporters urging him to come back into the spotlight. Bull. Hubris is excessive pride and arrogance. Or maybe he's just delusional.

DO YOU CARE NOW? PART 3 or 400

HEALTH POST

In my hometown of Evanston, it was always a running joke that if anything serious happened to you, make sure they send to Northwestern Evanston Hospital and not St. Francis. I actually remember being on the Metra and a woman was having chest pains. When the conductor offered to help her off at the St. Francis Hospital stop, she actually refused and said she wanted the Evanston Hospital stop since it was only 2 stops away. I'm not joking. So Northwestern is also the preferred hospital in Chicago, but it appears to better for some than others. Do patients get VIP status on 9th floor? :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Mary Mitchell

ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS IS BLACK

9.04.2007

I've been wanting to write an article like this forever. When the white heroine needs help, she usually has a BBF to lean on - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com. Black women are always (if given the chance to be on screen at all) the best friend; a filler for scenes where the white girl needs someone to complain to. The Nanny Diaries, where Alicia Keys plays Scarlett Johansson's BBFF, it's more of the same. They always say, let's make sure we can get a few black women in the theatre because they think a sister has a real role. They want our money too, but they aren't going to give us anything substantive. They never even get enough lines to compete for a best supporting actress.

"Julia Louis-Dreyers has one. Sandra Bullock had one. So did Jennifer Garner and Katie Holmes. Jennifer Love Hewitt has had two. Calista Flockhart took hers dancing. Kate Walsh had one, lost her, and got another one with a different face but the same name. And Scarlett Johansson got her first one last weekend."

PRINCESS Z & MR. JT

I think I should do a Princess Z pic of the day. Here's one of Brad chasing her in Central Park last week.
Here's one of her with the whole family (there is like 10 of them now) in Venice.
I know they love all their kids, but Z appears to be Daddy's favorite. I hardly ever see him without her.

I realize that I am a grown black woman, but JT killed that special last night.

RACIST MUCH?

I found this at my favorite political blog, Booker Rising

People are mad at the latest criminal policy offered by Switzerland's largest political party and you can see why. The picture of 3 white sheep kicking one black sheep out of the country for "more security" of the country. WTF? This is...uhm pretty, really, totally racist. Swiss deportation policy draws criticism - Yahoo! News. I don't throw the R-word around hardly ever because I don't see ignorance & prejudice as the same as racist. It can get complicated, but this is pretty simple to me. Yes, they say they mean "black sheep" in the traditional sense meaning "the bad segments of society" and not necessarily the dark people in their society, but with their fervent anti-immigration policies, it seems clear what this is. Bitches.

The nationalist Swiss People's Party(dead give away in the name, right) is proposing a deportation policy that anti-racism campaigners say evokes Nazi-era practices. Under the plan, entire families would be expelled if their children are convicted of a violent crime, drug offenses or benefits fraud. The party is trying to collect the 100,000 signatures needed to force a referendum on the issue. If approved in a referendum, the law would be the only one of its kind in Europe.

BROKEBACK BATHROOM-GATE PART IV

The distinguished hypocrite from Idaho has resigned, but he has not given up. Amid sex scandal, Sen. Craig resigns - CNN.com. I guess he claims he's only resigning because of Republican pressure. The GOP was quicker than usual in getting rid of him. Since they have no fear of a Democrat taking his seat they only had to be concerned about stopping the bleeding.

The party has taken yet another hit and this is different than Vitter for many reasons. Vitter admitting to wrongdoing, but was not arrested, charged or convicted/confessed to any crime. Craig did and that is what did him in. I'm sure many of them wish Vitter would get out of the town too, but they aren't so sure they can replace him because the Governor is a Democrat.

They had hoped this would go away with him now, but Craig plans on coming back for a month after the holiday. And he says he vows to fight this "witch hunt" meaning he will stay in the news. The GOP can't be happy about this.

He just hired Michael Vick's lawyer, Billy Martin, he's the brother (and Howard grad) from DC firm Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan who has defended just about every powerful person in D.C.

LOCAL RACE AND/OR POLITICS ROUNDUP

9.03.2007

COLORADO
The "Rap Music" card is the new black. Colorado Police Link Rise in Violence to Music - New York Times. Colorado Springs is a pretty uptight, military heavy and religious community and the devil music is turning it into the off ramp to the apocalypse.

NEW YORK
What will they do? Take the bus? I'm sure the upper crust is just passing out at the thought of a shortage of private limo services and what that means. Cabbies’ Group Vows a 2-Day Protest Strike - New York Times. City officials expressed skepticism that a telling number of the drivers of the city’s 13,180 medallion taxis would participate in the work stoppage, scheduled to start at 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Still, they said, the city is prepared to deal with a strike, though they would not elaborate on their contingency plans.

NEVADA
No one could ever accuse Bob Herbert of holding back or sugar coating. This column, City as Predator - New York Times, tells us why there is no city in America where women are treated worse than in Las Vegas. Uhm...didn't he know that prostitution was made legal outside of Henderson county, so no more Pimps, 6 month HIV tests and union representation. That's a step up by "the only way is up" standards.
There are more than 150 pages of ads in the Las Vegas yellow pages for “college teens,” “mature women,” “mothers and daughters,” “petite Japanese women,” “Chinese teens in short skirts” and every other variation imaginable. I asked Mayor Goodman about that, and he said: “We’ve changed that a little bit. They used to have pictures.”

CALIFORNIA
Black people are leaving San Francisco. The straight black people at least. San Francisco hopes to reverse black flight - USATODAY.com

WISCONSIN
Wisconsin is among the top states in the country when it comes to locking up black men. The rate is 10.6 times the rate for white men, according to a report last month by The Sentencing Project, a non-profit advocacy group. That's the kind of recognition that earned us the title of "Ten Worst Places to Be Black" from a national online publication a few years ago.
So Wisconsin puts all its black men in jail (there are about 10 black men total in the state, right?), but at least someone listens to them after they get there. Silver lining! JS Online: Inmates' input can be valuable

TEXAS

Officer suspended over 'Ghetto Handbook' - USATODAY.com. The eight-page booklet, subtitled "Wucha dun did now?", was handed out to about 15 Houston Independent School District police officers at a May meeting, district spokesman Terry Abbott said. Officials declined to identify the officer who handed them out, but said he had been ordered to attend diversity training.
