The news story for the day is the NYTimes break on McCain having a "close" relationship with a female lobbyist and using his influence and voting power to support her efforts in the telecommunications industry. Both McCain and the woman denied it and McCain bit back pretty hard this morning. The article is iffy. There are a lot of anonymous sources, but I know that doesn't mean it isn't true.
The whole affair thing is a "who knows" situation and that's between him and his wife. Any relationship between a married man and single woman is going to raise eyebrows these days even if all they are is close friends. Aides say the reason they stressed she stay away from McCain was because his relationships with lobbyists had been in question for a while during the 2000 campaign and she was around too often.
However, to accuse a man running for President of serious ethics violations is a serious thing and something the voters need to know more about IF its true. McCain has a good reputation on The Hill even according to conservatives who hate him. I don't think people will be inclined to believe this report unless something more concrete shows its face.
