SPITZER - TOO BAD

3.11.2008

It's a shame that Spitzer's career is over. Although he was a bit too "big government is the answer" for my taste, he is a smart guy and could have had a great future in politics. He was being considered in some circles as a VP candidate for either Hills or Barry and possibly someone going for the top spot himself one day. But I don't think he has much choice but to step down now for several reasons.

The most important reasons is that he broke the law. He is the head of the state, so it means more than some state councilman doing the same. Also, he ran for Governor on a ticket of integrity and a vow to clean things up. Not to add the fact that he was ATTORNEY GENERAL, the top cop in the state. And its not a case of a trial or conviction because, let's face it, he confessed yesterday. I know looking at Senator Craig who was convicted of public indecency, Senator Vitter who admitting to being involved in a prostitution scandal, and Mayor Kilpatrick of Detroit who is likely to be indicted for perjury, the trend is to just admit you made a mistake and stay put. However, Spitzer is a big deal and the Republicans have been so hard hit with sex or corruption related scandals, they will not let this get swept under the rug. I feel sorry for his wife and his three teenaged daughters who will have to deal with this at school. People always make such bad choices without concern for the fact that they won't be the only ones paying the consequences if they get caught.
The NYTimes of course went to town on the story and did a few great ones about his promise and fall from grace.
