This June 12th, the swirl society will celebrate "Loving Day" which is a holiday for interracial couples named after the two people whose marriage overturned miscegenation laws across the nation. Some people refer to Mildred (black) and Richard (white) Loving as the parents of American interracial marriage. We all know that swirling has gone on since the beginning of time, but in America, this is a landmark decision, so it's appropriate. These weren't political, defiant attention seekers. They were very simple, basic people and had no idea when they were arrested for "cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth(VA)," they would have a place in history.
Richard Loving died in a car accident several years ago, but Mildred Loving died last Friday at age 68. So think of her on the 12th of June.
