October 26 - In 1911, Mahalia Jackson was born

October 27 - In 1954, Benjamin Davis became 1st black general in the US Air Force

October 29 - In 1974, Muhammad Ali fought George Foreman

October 30 - In 1954, the armed forces black unit was abolished. In 1975, Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier in the "Thrilla in Manilla." In 1979, Richard Arrington became the 1st black mayor of Birmingham.

October 31 - In 1945, Booker T Washington entered the Hall of Fame for Great Americans.

November 1 - In 1945, the first issue of Ebony Magazine published. In 1787, the 1st free school in New York for blacks opened.
